Here’s the process to adopt one of our Heavenly Hounds:

Please do some research to see if this is the right breed for you and your family situation. A great source of fun and informative Basset stuff is The Daily Drool.  If you now have a Basset, or had one in the past, then you're already prepared for what being owned by a Basset Hound is all about!

Fill out an online application. We must have that application filled out completely before we can proceed. Please remember that we do adoptions in the southern Nevada area only. If you live outside this area, please visit  Daily Drool Rescue Page There is a listing of all the Basset Rescues across the USA and Canada--all have wonderful dogs awaiting new homes.

After receiving your application we will follow-up with either an email or phone call. We may want to talk to you further to clarify information that you've put on your application. At the end of the application there is a space for "Additional Info". We encourage you to write about your past and present pets, tell us about your family, etc. It gives us insight into what type of personality you are looking for in a Basset. Our rescues stay in foster homes where we are able to assess their personalities and needs--allowing us to assist in placing the right dog with the right family for him/her.

Home visits are required and we will bring the hound to your home for a meeting. What are we looking for? Not to see if your house is eligible for The Parade of Homes or to give it a white glove test. We are checking for a secure fence and a safe home. We will want to see how the Basset interacts with all family members or other pets. For that reason we'd like all family members there at the time of the home visit and we will plan our visit accordingly. We won't necessarily do an adoption at the time of the home visit. It may be decided, by the rescue agent and the family alike, that the family is given some time to think about it and/or prepare for the new addition to the family. No one wants a hasty decision. Adoption is a lifetime commitment.

There will be an adoption fee. This fee helps LVBR recover just some of the costs of the medical care. We usually spend much more than our nominal adoption fee to ready our rescues for adoption. Spays/neuters, vaccines, fecals, bloodwork, dentals, and medicines are just some of the routine things done. Many other dogs need more than just the routine procedures. Dogs 2 years old and up are $150. Under 2 years old will be $250. Seniors and Special Needs dogs may have a lower fee.  All dogs will be spayed and neutered, no exceptions. We supply all vet records--and encourage the adopting family to have their vet clinic request all of the dog's medical records from our veterinarian.

We require a signed Adoption Contract at the time of Adoption. Among other things, it states that you must return the dog to Las Vegas Basset Rescue if for any reason the adoption does not work out. Our contract is for the protection of the dog.

The next step is to welcome, with open arms, the Basset you have chosen. These dogs have been through the stress of abandonment and are looking for a lifetime commitment. They need your acceptance, patience, and kindness as they make the transition into their new family. In return, you will receive unconditional love and devotion. Many people have remarked that rescued dogs seem to show even more affection, dedication and the need to please, than dogs that have been in the same home since they were little pups. We find that's true. They may have known neglect and homelessness, so they appreciate even more what they now have with their new families. They are grateful.

Enjoy your new, forever friend. We invite all of our adopters to stay in touch and let us know how they all are doing. We love getting updates!!
